Every year in Malaysia, on the fifteenth day of the seventh month in the traditional Chinese calendar, we see thousands of these roadside offerings neatly placed around our neighbourhoods. Many of us walk away from them quickly, just to be safe, to give the spirits their moment of privacy. But what happens if we step closer? What will we witness when we tread the line between the living and those who have passed?

Directed by Christopher Ling, ‘Hungry’ is the latest offering from award-winning Singaporean playwright Desmond Sim, his first in eleven years. It tells a tale about a family of four forced to confront the weight of love and loss, all while bringing back to life stories of their buried hopes, forgotten dreams, and the all-too familiar craving for the human connection, one that may never be sated in a single lifetime.
